Entering Wednesday, Joel Embiid is averaging 27.0 points, 13.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game for the Sixers. The 24-year-old is shooting 46.8 percent from the field, 30.1 percent from beyond the arc and 79.7 percent from the free-throw line.
Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic may be a better passer than Embiid, but that’s about it. Joel Embiid is a superior scorer, rebounder and defender. He commands more attention in the paint and is a terror on the defensive side of the ball. Jokic doesn’t have the lateral foot speed which Embiid has and he struggles on defense frequently as a result.
This isn’t to take away from Jokic’s greatness. He’s a star player as well and racks up triple-doubles with relative ease. It’s just that Joel Embiid is on another level and can dominate the game on both ends of the court. Embiid is averaging 2.0 blocks per game, while Jokic is at 0.7. For a scoring guard like Lou Williams is, it’s not surprising that he’s picking Embiid over Jokic. Many of Williams’ shot must have been affected by Embiid’s length when he’s driving to the basket against the Sixers.
